Approximately three times a year the planet Mercury—which just like the Roman God, symbolizes communication, information, eduction, and transportation—appears to be moving backwards because Earth is orbiting past it. Sort of like when you’re driving faster than the car next to you. You’re both moving in the same direction, but in relation to your car the other car looks like it’s going backwards. As all of these aspects in our lives appear to go “backwards” during this time, it is said we shouldn’t make important decisions or start anything new because we might miscommunicate something or we might not have all the clarity-of-mind or information we need. The most common piece of advice astrologers offer us during this time is, don’t start anything new unless you plan to never finish it.
There’s an upside to being in the energy of a retrograde.
Planetary retrogrades offer us something invaluable, a time for all words that begin with “re-”such as review, revisit, revise, remember, reexamine, reorganize…… Take a step back for a moment, to reconnect.
In the case of Mercury, perhaps these areas in your life (communication, information, eduction, and transportation) could use some revamping or perhaps you need to do more research before making an important decision? Maybe there are old projects or friendships that need to be revisited? It can also be a time to revive and recreate projects that—for any number of reasons—had been put on the back burner.
