What is Shamanic Reiki?

by Jennifer Masters

My journey through the world of energy and spiritual healing consciously began with Reiki (ray-key). I was first exposed to it via my yoga teacher, now my Reiki teacher. It’s a modality of energy healing that is commonly believed to have been re-discovered by a Japanese Buddhist Monk while traveling in Tibet around a hundred years ago (and it more than likely came from Egypt). Passed on aurally through the years, it has evolved. Today there are many “lineages” or modalities of Reiki, some utilize what are considered more traditional methods, some non-traditional.

It works by way of a practitioner channeling, or transferring, “universal life-force energy” into a receiver by laying-on of hands. It works on the physical, emotional, and spiritual levels. It can be used across distance and time. Everyone naturally has this life-force energy flowing through them, but the increased flow in a healing session allows the receiver to heal better and faster than they otherwise would. It is also very effective for self-healing.

Just like everything else in my life, the way I practice Reiki has become very nuanced by my Shamanic perspective of the world. Everything is connected—our physical body, our emotional body, our spirit body, our relationships to self, others, Spirit (God or divine source), the way we think about things, the way we treat ourselves, where we spend our time—and an imbalance in any area has a spiritual component and can be seen in the “spirit body.” Using Reiki in conjunction with looking at the receiver’s spirit can prove instrumental in finding the cause of dis-ease, enabling elimination and prevention.

What is needed? How can I serve? These are questions I ask when I am facilitating healing for someone. I ask Spirit, and my spirit guides and power animals, working in connection with the receiver’s spirit guides and power animals, for answers. Sometimes my guides direct the energy flow and facilitate healing, sometimes they guide me to direct the flow, sometimes I am given messages to pass along to the recipient.

Over time I’ve incorporated everything I’ve learned over the years, for a healing modality that’s unique to me, and not easy to name or describe. So I call it “Shamanic Reiki” and I’m aware that it’s really a whole lot more than this. At the heart it all boils down to connection, listening to Spirit, and moving energy. The goals are always the same: health, wholeness, happiness.

We humans are capable of so much more than meets the eye. There is a healer within each of us. Whether we know it or not, we have the power to heal ourselves, and to help others heal. Health, wholeness, and happiness are within our reach.
